What is counselling?
Counselling is a recognized way of helping people with relational, emotional or psychological problems. It provides a safe, confidential and professional and collaborative relationship in which a client can talk through their problem with an experienced listener.
A counsellor is committed to listening carefully to the client in order to understand the client’s experience of their problem and empower them in finding solutions or making changes to achieve their goals.
Counselling is not advice giving or telling clients what to do, it is also not merely a discussion. Thoroughly researched and proven strategies are used to assist the client in making sense of their own feelings and responses and discovering new ways of working toward wholeness.
Counsellors work in conjunction with medical practitioners and other health professionals. They are not doctors and do not diagnose or prescribe medications.
Why should I see a counsellor?
Problems have a way of making us feel isolated and overwhelmed. Many people feel like they are the only ones who think and feel this way and that they should be able to manage it on their own.
Deciding to see a counsellor takes courage and strength. It breaks the sense of isolation and provides a means to consider new ways of understanding themselves and the problems they are dealing with.
Counselling helps clients discover new strategies and behaviours to make the changes they desire.
How long will it take?
Each session lasts an hour. The duration of therapy depends on the complexity of the problem and the rate at which clients process and implement change. Usually, several sessions are required to bring about lasting change. Counselling provides an opportunity for people to feel heard and supported. Clients are free to end counselling at any time.
Feel free to discuss with Karen any concerns you may have.
